Chapter 11

Jayden remains protected in the cave with Eustace and Constance, who are also tasked with watching the two prisoners. Laurence, Alwyn, Osgoode, and Toly put their plan in place to free Wyndham. Always skeptical, Alwyn remains doubtful of the Hunters’ sincerity in helping to liberate the knight:

I do not trust Osgoode and Toly. They have put my family at risk, in particular, my youngest brother, Laurence.

The youngest of my siblings, Laurence, is an arrogant young man who flaps his arms in battle and puffs his chest out. It reminds me of the brightly colored pegster birds that behave in similar fashion to woo females. But for Laurence, there is no good reason for such behavior, except to prove he is the bravest and the fiercest fighter in all of Canonsland.

He is a reckless boy.

Stop scowling at Laurence, Alwyn, Eustace has said to me many times.

My answer is always this: The boy is always so keen to go charging into battle alone. If Wyndham does not instruct him properly on how best to survive as a knight, he will be killed in a few short months after he becomes one.

Eustace and I have many fights about young Laurence.

Eustace is different. His gesture and mannerisms are those of a diplomat. He should look for a life in politics. His mind is such.

Most days, Eustace’s words do not bother me but work well to ease my mind. But as I recall these past conversations now, my face reddens much as wood that is scraped together to create a fire. Water droplets form on my brow, and I place my hand to my forehead and wipe them away with my palm. The sensation of sticky perspiration drips down my back as well. The uncomfortableness of sweat adds fuel to my already hot temper.

But Eustace sees things in Laurence that I do not. He has said, Laurence may be many things—impertinent and impatient are two—but he knows the mind of people well. While at times, his emotions rule his thoughts and actions, he’s got a good sense of who to trust and who would deceive him.

As we approach the tower together, Toly whispers, “Osgoode and I will enter first. I will hold my sword to Osgoode’s back as if I have recaptured him. Laurence and Alwyn, you follow behind. One guard remains. It will be enough of a distraction in seeing the recaptured prisoner that the guard, Godfrey, will not challenge me. There are many corners in the tower and therefore many places to hide. Find the right spot, and do what you must to the guard. So long as he does not reach the bell and summon the others, you will be able to escape with Wyndham before anyone knows. If he rings the bell, we will find ourselves in a difficult and outnumbered position. There will be many that will come; we are four and Wyndham.”

“Do you trust him?” I say, turning to Osgoode. “Your life and ours now rest in his hands.
